My Dad Loved A New John Updike Novel

In yesterday's NYT Book Review, Turkish writer Orhan Pamuk reviews Adam Begley's biography 'Updike.' I read the reniew and wished my dad and I could share it. He loved John Updike's novels and I gifted him with an Updike novel many a Christmas. When he and mom pared down before their move to Seattle, he returned the favor by gifting me me with his collection of Updike's books.
Back in the early 1980s, I took Dad to hear John Updike read at the University of Houston. After the event, on our way to the parking lot, we saw John Updike walking with - was it Donald Barthelme? - to the same parking lot. If that had happened today, I'd have walked over and introduced my Dad as a great Updike fan. As it was, Dad was happy just to be part of an Updike sighting.
