'A Nation Seized' or September VOGUE?

Correction: I've rewritten this post a bit. I mistakenly identified Bill Elliot, author of 'A Nation Seized', as on the faculty at University of Texas. He is at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. Read the corrected post and order his book. You will not be disappointed.

I have a choice of reading materials this evening, both of which were delivered to my front door late this afternoon. The mail slot was too small for the September issue of VOGUE. This year's extravaganza weighs in with 758 pages of fashion and advertising. BTW, this year's September issue is smaller - though it doesn't look smaller - than both 2007 and 2008 editions which touted 840 and 798 pages, respectively. I can't lay my hands on 2009 and 2010 for more comparisons.
My second option is 'A Nation Seized, How Karl Rove and the Political Right Stole Reality, Beginning With the News.' How is that for a title? 'A Nation Seized' is written by Bill Israel, an associate professor of Journalism and Political Communication and director of Graduate Communication Studies at St. Mary's University in San Antonio. He's a man who knows and has watched Karl Rove for decades. In 1998, Bill Israel team-taught 'Politics and the Press' with Rove and political journalist Dave McNeely at the University of Texas in Austin.
I know before I even begin to read this book that it will soon have penciled check marks and underlining. The corners of many of its pages will be turned down too.
There is no way I am putting the September VOGUE ahead of 'A Nation Seized.' NO contest here. I am heading straight to bed to prop up those pillows and dive right into a recounting of the activities of a strategic evil genius who doesn't play fair and is certainly changing the way Americans see their political world.

Hmmmmm...I don't know. The current political news has me feeling beaten down. I think I would go with "Vogue" tonight.

Dear MMH:

Sharon may well be right -- but as the author of "A Nation Seized," I think you chose well!

One correction: I'm a professor at St. Mary's University, San Antonio; Rove and I taught together at UT Austin.

Once you finish the book, let me know. I'd enjoy visiting with you about it, if you'd like.

Best wishes,

Bill Israel
